Energy Matters

The definition of fuel poverty is where more that 10% of net income, after housing costs, is spent on fuel.

40% of Scots are in fuel poverty (CAB).

Ways of delivering cheaper, more sustainable energy to households must be found.

Energy price increases

We have all been hit by the sharp increase in energy prices through 2022. Much of this is due to our current reliance on fossil fuels, impacted by tightening supply due to the war in Ukraine. This is accelerating moves to more secure, reliable energy supplies.

How much do we use?

The Scottish government publishes a map of the heating usage dwellings, estimated from floor area, EPC ratings etc., going to a resolution of 50m squares. The total heating need for Kinross and Milnathort is about 60 GWhr per year.

That’s the equivalent of 11,000 tonnes of CO2e annually,

ie 11,000 transatlantic flights

Or for those of you who remember the size of the old grey gasometers, the CO2 emissions would fill the volume of Loch Leven in about 10 years,

ie. a CO2 duvet about 0.5 m thick, the size of Loch Leven, each year !
